Besøgende på øen kan ikke undgå at stå i ærefrygt ved første øjekast på dette sted: den majestætiske Sheikh Zayed i hvid uberørt marmor. Som et arkitektonisk mesterværk med enorme proportioner har den 880 kupler, 1000 søjler og plads til op til 40.000 tilbedere. Det er et førsteklasses eksempel på moderne islamisk arkitektur og var både den store vision for afdøde præsident Sheik Zayed bin Sulta Al Nahyan og hans sidste hvilested.
Med en blanding af mameluk, osmannisk, fatimid og indo-islamiske arkitektoniske stilarter med den mere moderne har moskeen involveret arbejde fra kunsthåndværkere fra hele kloden. Resultatet er et ærefrygtindgydende vartegn, som superlativer knap kan beskrive. Ikke alene er det den største moské i landet, men kan også prale af følgende: den største mosaik i verden, det største tæppe og den tredjestørste lysekrone med 11 tons blændende Swarovski-krystaller og galvaniseret guld 24-karat.
Heldigvis for mange er det også en af de få moskeer i landet, hvor ikke-muslimer får lov til at komme ind. Men husk at respektere moskeens etikette ved at bære lange, løstsiddende bukser eller nederdele i ankel-længde, tøj med lange ærmer og tørklæde for kvinder.

“Die E Sportplattform war komplett gesperrt. Das ist eigentlich ein absolutes nogo. Schade das wir das nicht früher gewusst haben. Dann wäre diese Ausflug komplett gekanselt worden.”
“There is very little information on this tour. Would have been helpful to know that ladies visiting the mosque should be fully covered head to toe and not wear anything see-through or sheer. Told we would see the palace but it was from the other side of the river, not quite the view we envisaged. Visited a shop portrayed as a 'local gallery' and sat in a room where they tried to sell carpets to us. Then taken to a shop selling different types of dates, again, another sales pitch. Disappointing”
“Die Ausschreibung „Moschee und Heritage Village“ wurde geboten. Leider war der Ausstellungsteil im Village geschlossen, nur die Verkaufsstände geöffnet. Anschließend ein Mittagessen schlechter Qualität zum Aufpreis von 25,-€ pP, welches 1 h in Anspruch nahm (man wurde gefragt, ob man das möchte aber eine Alternative gab es nicht). Danach direkter Rückweg. Hier bot der Reiseleiter halbherzig weitere Möglichkeiten an, riet aber zur Rückfahrt. Leider bekam man keinen Überblick von Abu Dhabi!”
