Udforsk det maleriske Pena-slot, kåret som et af de 10 steder i verden, der hører til i et eventyr. Beliggende højt oppe på en bjergtop i Serra-bjergene i Sintra kan Pena-slottet (Palacio da Pena på portugisisk) ses fra Lissabon på en klar dag, og det er et besøg værd for at observere omfanget af arbejdet i egen person. Kaldt et af de syv vidundere i Portugal af Kulturministeriet er slottet blevet et nationalt monument, der viser et af de større udtryk for Romantikken i det 19. århundrede. Slottet har lyse farver, der virker som et farvekodet indeks til dets arkitektoniske historie, skabt ved at sammenblande tårne, facader og arkitektoniske træk på flere bygninger. Den røde del er den ældste del og stammer fra det 15. århundrede. Mens de gule buer og kuplerne er fra maurisk indflydelse, og de blå strukturer er i manuelinsk stil. De var begge senere tilføjelser.
Fra år 1493, da landet først blev besat af Kong Johan 2., blev grunden doneret til Skt. Jerome-ordenen, hvis munke brugte bygningen til meditation, indtil det store Lissabon-jordskælv i 1755. Efter flere år i ruiner blev klosteret og de omkringliggende landområder købt af Ferdinand 2, som skabte en stor ejendom tegnet af den portugisiske arkitekt, Possidonio da Silva, der benyttede eklektiske stilarter med egyptiske, mauriske, gotiske og renæssance-elementer.
For at nå til Pena-slottet er det nødvendigt først at passere gennem parkens indgang. Herfra kan du vælge at gå ad de snoede stier i den frodige have eller hoppe på en hurtig togtur til €2,00 (retur). Udforsk derinde slottet vægge og se de overdådigt indrettede værelser med vægge med freskoer og møbler. Sørg for at besøge Dronningens Terrasse. Desværre er fotografering ikke tilladt derinde, men sørg for at vandre til Cruz Alta med Sankt Maria-udsigtspunktet for en betagende udsigt til slottet.
