Denne formiddag i Timanfaya Nationalpark er ikke nogen almindelig tur. Under denne sjove eventyr udforsker vi Lanzarotes største attraktion med både traditionelle og moderne transportmidler. Højdepunkterne er den historiske "Ravens vulkan" eller Volcan del Cuervo, et besøgscenter, El Femés-udsigtspunktet. og selvfølgelig en tur på kamel. Marian, en af vores lokale guider, siger: "Du kommer ind i et vulkankrater - det er en virkelig gysende oplevelse - mens kamelturen giver tid til at fordybe sig i månelandskabet".

Først kommer vi til Volcan del Cuervo. Den ligger i udkanten af Timanfaya Nationalpark og bryder ud af et landskab af kulsort sod. Det var her, at de vulkanudbrud, der skabte Timanfaya, begyndte i 1730. Tårnende vægge omgiver krateret, bortset fra et hul, der er åbnet af en flod af lava, og som giver adgang til bunden af krateret. Derefter tager vi over til Mancha Blanca besøgscenter. Derefter er det tid til kamelridning. Siddende på træsæder spændt fast til den enpuklede kamel bliver du ført rundt, mens du beser det vilde og vidunderlige vulkanske landskab. Hvis du ikke har lyst til at ride på kamel, kan du booke en version af turen uden den del. Oplev også et lille museum dedikeret til den kanariske kamel, som er kærligt kendt som "tochas". Du kan også nyde den flotte udsigt fra El Femés-udsigtspunktet, der ligger 450 m over havets overflade og har udsigt til Los Ajaches, Playa Blanca, Fuerteventura og Lobos-øen.

When picked up in our mini bus, we were sat on the very back seat, when the driver was giving out details and a run down of the history of the volcanoes and other bits of information of the island, we could not hear any of it.

Absolutely amazing experience for the whole family. I was worried about taking my 5 year old along but she loved everything about it. The walk to the volcano is really quite relaxing and not difficult at all. All my children loved it would definitely recommend.

An indication as to what clothes to wear would be of benefit. We were first there at 9.30 in April, wind was strong and cold. Some of our group just wore t-shirts, they were cold. Would recommend a light weight wind proof or jacket plus a hoodie. Inland is colder than the seafront. Ride wasn't quite as long as anticipated, but it did give a good indication

Nat Geo Day Tour: La Geria, Vineyards that Sprouted from Fire

When Timanfaya's six long years of eruptions ceased in 1736, the farmers of La Geria believed their fertile lands were lost forever under a thick layer of ash. But the local families needed to make the land productive again, and through sheer hard work and determination, they succeeded in creating the vineyards of La Geria. You'll start off with a scenic walk, following trails through private vineyards belonging to the family-owned bodega of Nacho Romero, opened exclusively for National Geographic travellers. As you soak up the unique character of these landscapes where vineyards are surrounded by volcanoes, the owner will explain how the layer of volcanic ash, known locally as ‘picón,' has shaped their cultivation methods, which are unique in the world. If you are lucky enough to find them ripe, you might even get to pick grapes straight from the vine as you hear Nacho or his wife Luisa, both winemakers, talk about the characteristics of volcanic wine. Back at the bodega after the walk, you'll be able to sample one of the artisanal wines that Nacho and Luisa make in their home winery. Next, you'll head to Bodega La Geria – another important component of the ecological wine making movement. The winemaker himself will show you around the bodega. Find out the secrets of the hollows, called ‘zocos' which shelter the vines from the wind, and discover the different varieties of grapes that thrive in Lanzarote's volcanic terroir. To finish, savour a tasting of one of the estate's renowned wines with local cheese and crackers.
