Moderne efterforskningsteknikker tillod isolering af DNA fra en af de mistænkte på et gammelt sjal ejet af et af seriemorderens ofre. Den prostituerede Catherine Eddowes blev myrdet den 30. september 1888 i Whitechapel. Det ser ud til, at Jack the Ripper endelig havde fået et ansigt og et navn: Aaron Kominski. Han var en treogtyve-årig barber af ydmyg oprindelse. Ifølge efterforskerne havde den unge mand stærke morderiske tendenser og et stort had til kvinder, men de kunne ikke inkriminere Kominski, der døde ustraffet på et psykiatrisk hospital i 1899 på grund af en sygdom.
