Ting at foretage sig på El Escorial
El Escorial-klostret er et af de vigtigste monumenter i Spanien. Beliggende på den sydøstlige skråning Sierra de Guadarrama i kommunen San Lorenzo de El Escorial (i den selvstyrende region Madrid) blev klostret erklæret Verdensarvssted af UNESCO. Det blev bygget i det sekstende århundrede (mellem 1563 og 1584) og blev den største bygning i hele Europa. Komplekset omfatter et kongeligt palads, en basilika, en kirkegård, et bibliotek og et kloster. Paladset var residens for den spanske kongefamilie, basilikaen er gravplads for de spanske konger, og klostret bruges i øjeblikket af augustinermunke. Også kendt som San Lorenzo El Real-klosteret, eller blot El Escorial, blev det grundlagt af munke inden for Hieronymus-ordenen. Komplekset er designet af Kong Filip 2. og hans arkitekt Juan Bautista de Toledo. Efterfølgende kom andre arkitekter med i projektet, blandt andrer Juan de Herrera, Juan de Minjares, Giovanni Battista Castello, Bergamasco og Francisco de Mora. I slutningen af det sekstende århundrede blev klostret betragtet som det ottende vidunder i verden på grund af dens størrelse, funktionelle kompleksitet og symbolske værdi.
