Herculaneum er en by, der har udsigt over Napoli-bugten, berømt i hele verden for de arkæologiske udgravninger af den antikke romerske by.
Legenden siger, at byen blev grundlagt omkring 600 f.Kr. af Hercules og blev sidenhen en vigtig handelsby på grund af dens førsteklasses beliggenhed nær bugten. Indbyggerne i byen tilbad Herkules, som også grundlagde det nærtliggende bjerg Vesuv.
I 79 e.Kr. gik Vesuv i udbrud og ødelagde byen og efterlod Herculaneum begravet under 18m vulkansk mudder og aske. Det var først i begyndelsen af det 18. århundrede, at byen blev opdaget af en brøndgravemaskine. Oprindeligt troede man, at Herkules og alle andre havde undsluppet før katastrofen i byen, men omkring 300 skeletter er blevet opdaget under udgravningerne.
Vejen til de arkæologiske udgravninger op til Torre del Greco kaldes Den gyldne mil på grund af de pragtfulde villaer bygget langs vejen i det attende århundrede.
Mange turister fra hele verden kommer her for at besøge ruinerne af Herculaneum, samt den nærliggende by Pompeji, som også blev ødelagt af den samme Vesuv-udbrud. Når du indtræder i ruinerne, kan du se de mange fine huse i Herculaneum, der består af overdådige farvede mosaikker, vægmalerier og marmorbeklædning.
Udgravningerne er medtaget på listen over UNESCO Verdensarvssteder.
