Scenekunst-kulturen fik sin berømmelse i New York tilbage i 1750, da Thomas Kean og Walter Murray åbnede et teater på Nassau Street. De første forestillinger, der blev introduceret til newyorkere var Shakespeares skuespil og operaer. Det var først i begyndelsen af 1900'erne, at teatre begyndte at blive bygget ved Times Square.
