Navnet Murano ekkoer omkring i verden takket være kunsten af øens mesterlige glaskunstnere. Glasset kom til Venedig omkring år 1000 og takket være handelsmæssige forbindelser med Østen, nåede teknikkerne til glasfremstilling til det højeste niveau. Men omkring år 1100, på grund af forurening og faren for brande, blev ovne forbudt i Venedig og, de blev flyttet til den nærliggende ø Murano. Her gav familier hemmelighederne bag glaskunst videre fra generation til generation. Ingen i verden har formået at gøre dem kunsten efter, og stadig i dag er Muranoglas en garanti for kvalitet og kreativitet. På øen kan du besøge ovnene og Glasmuseet og se kunsthåndværkerne i arbejde, såvel som købe skønne souvenirer med hjem til minde om din rejse.
Den spektakulære ø Burano blev berømt for håndlavede kniplinger i det 16. århundrede. Selvom kniplingeproduktion på øen faldt i det 18. århundrede, blev det genoplivet i det 19. århundrede, da en skole for kniplingeproduktion blev åbnet. I dag sidder kunsthåndværkerne ved dørene i deres farverige huse og fletter de mest imponerende kniplinger. Nyd en gåtur gennem de maleriske gader, mens du beundrer de farverige huse eller stopper på en af øens berømte restauranter, med speciale i frisk mad fra havet. Øen er også hjem Kniplingemuseet og mange butikker, der sælger smukke kniplinger, men sørg for at kontrollere ægtheden, hvis du beslutter at købe. De ægte Burano-kniplinger tager lang tid at lave, og selv det mindste stykke kan tage uger at færdiggøre, så det er som regel meget dyrere.
