Ting at foretage sig på San Giorgio Maggiore
Beliggende foran San Marcos-katedralen er øen et af de emblematiske steder i Venedig. Den får sit fra kirken dedikeret til St George, der blev bygget i det 9. århundrede.
Begyndende i år 982 blev øen og klosteret et vigtigt åndeligt og kulturelt centrum for byen.
Efter Den Venetianske Republiks fald i 1797 blev klosteret brugt som en militær kaserne og fængsel. Øen oplevede en lang periode med forfald og forsømmelse, men i 1950'erne restaurerede Giorgio Cini dens pragt ved at restaurere komplekset.
Øen er hjem for hovedkvarteret for Giorgio Cini Foundation og det internationale kulturcenter, og dens bygninger huser rum til udstillinger, koncerter, konferencer og møder samt et bibliotek specialiseret i kunsthistorie.
